Embryonics are pleased to introduce a new one day course
“An introduction to cattle fertility.”
The course is designed to compliment cattle fertility modules included in the curricula of General Agriculture and Dairy Herd Management courses currently available at Colleges of Agriculture. It offers the opportunity for students, herdsmen and other interested parties to consolidate their knowledge of fertility issues, and develop that knowledge through the use of hands on practical and discussion with experienced technicians, involved on a daily basis with fertility issues. The emphasis is upon practical skills, and people considering embarking upon an A.I. course may find this a valuable introduction. Those who have already qualified to do A.I. will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the processes involved, and develop their skills further.
The agenda for the one day course is as follows:
9:30am Discussion and analysis of:
a) The anatomy of the female bovine reproductive tract.
b) The oestrus cycle of the cow.Particular emphasis is placed upon understanding the functions of hormones in the cycle, and thereby gaining insight into the manipulation of the cycle with drugs both for therapeutic and management purposes.
11:00am Examination and dissection of reproductive tracts recovered from slaughtered animals. This offers trainees an opportunity to see and touch the organs and structures discussed during the consideration of anatomy earlier in the morning. Structures on the ovaries, discussed during the consideration of the oestrus cycle can also be seen and touched.
12:00noon. Lunch
1:15pm On In House Unit. Look at various drugs used in E.T. work. Look at an E.T. programme, discuss individual cases of animals in the unit, and tie this in with earlier discussion about the oestrus cycle and its manipulation with drugs.
2:15pm Trainees will have the opportunity, under the supervision of an experienced technician to feel reproductive tracts, in situ, in live cows. A scanner is set up, demonstrated, and its’ function and uses discussed.
4:00pm summing up of the days’ activities and final questions.
