Advanced Procedures for the Bovine Practitioner
Trainees will be able to select the appropriate animals for and perform the following procedures. They will also understand how to interpret the results.
At the end of this module trainees will, for each procedure, be able to:
§ List the indications for each procedure
§ Know the contra-indications
§ Communicate with farmers about the need (or not) for the procedure
§ Select appropriate animal or group of animals
§ Describe and prepare the equipment required
§ Explain suitable & safe procedures of restraint
§ Prepare the animals adequately
§ Perform the procedure
§ Discuss possible complications
§ Understand the limitations of the procedure
§ Know how to handle, store & transport samples when required
§ Perform &/or arrange any testing of samples collected
§ Interpret the results
§ Communicate with farmers about the results and advise on actions to be taken

Kate Burnby is an Independent Veterinary Consultant with many years experience, recently attending the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Utrecht in Holland to research veterinary training.
Kate qualified from Massey University in New Zealand 15 years ago and specializes in dairy work. In her varied career to date Kate has worked in New Zealand, the USA, the Netherlands and the UK. Kate has both practical and academic credentials with experience in University settings as well as clinical practice.
