Obstetrical Emergencies

Attendees will be able to diagnose and effectively handle obstetric and other common emergency procedures in cattle.

  • Calving – malpresentation
  • Calving – relative foetal oversize
  • Calving – uterine torsion
  • Foetotomy
  • Caesarian section
  • Uterine Trauma/Bleeding
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Toxic mastitis / shock / septicaemia
  • Metabolic collapse – Ca, Mg, Acid/Base imbalance

At the end of this module attendees will, for each emergency, be able to:

  • Diagnose the emergency rapidly and accurately
  • List the treatment options for each emergency
  • Describe the pros and cons of each option in different circumstances
  • Select an appropriate option depending on circumstances
  • Communicate with farmers about the method of treatment
  • Know and prepare the equipment required
  • Explain suitable & safe procedures of restraint
  • Prepare the animals adequately
  • Perform the treatment
  • Discuss possible complications
  • Prescribe appropriate care post treatment
  • Describe likely sequelae
  • Communicate with farmers about these and advise on actions to be taken
  • List the risk factors for each emergency
  • Advise farmers on ways of reducing risk

This practical based workshop is designed to enhance the knowledge and skill needed to deal with one of the commonest emergency cased encountered in LA work ‘Obstetrical Emergencies’.  Farmers are very proficient dealing with their own calving cows.  The workshop is designed to help you to be able to deliver the next level with confidence and success.
